The latest Toyota C-HR Plug-In Hybrid has arrived, and it’s a head-turner in every sense.

Combining futuristic design with eco-conscious engineering, this car is a vision of style and sustainability. As a former proud owner of the first-generation Toyota C-HR, I was eager to put the upgraded model to the test. I was given a Toyota C-HR PHEV GR Sport and couldn’t wait to drive it, especially on the long journey I had planned from London to Bristol with my partner and daughter in tow. Spoiler alert: it didn’t disappoint.

Exterior Design

The sleek silver and black finish on the Toyota C-HR PHEV that I drove gave it a striking design that exudes a sporty, almost avant-garde vibe. The bold lines, sculpted curves, and wrap-around brake lights give it a futuristic edge that stands out in a sea of SUVs. The spoiler adds a touch of aggression, while the alloy wheels strike a nice balance between style and practicality. Whether parked curbside or cruising down the motorway, this car really does demand attention.

Interior Comfort & Technology

Step inside, and the Toyota C-HR PHEV feels like a sanctuary. The cabin is thoughtfully designed, with high-quality materials that elevate the experience. No cheap plastics here—just a refined, premium feel that makes driving the Toyota C-HR PHEV a pleasure.

The large infotainment system is a standout, seamlessly integrated into the dashboard and offering intuitive controls. Ambient lighting adds a touch of sophistication and the linear lights that run across the door, subtly shift to red when detecting obstructions—a clever way to add a touch style to safety.

Standing over six feet tall, I found the driver’s seat incredibly comfortable, though this did significantly reduce the space behind my seat. Put simply, no one, not even a child could fit behind me as there was no rear legroom behind me which was a shame. However, if you are of average height or even on the short side, this car is pretty perfect, you’ll have no complaints and can fit taller people behind you.

The Toyota C-HR PHEV GR Sport Interior, which comes with heated seats and steering wheel are an absolute lifesaver in cold weather, and the dual-zone climate control ensures everyone stays cosy whether you’re a front-seat driver, riding shotgun or in the back.

The steering wheel is a particular highlight, as it comes with more tricks than a TikTok magician, but they’re actually useful – everything from volume control to cruise control is right where your thumbs want them, making it a breeze to stay focused on the road. If you haven’t tried this already, the adaptive cruise control is a game-changer for motorway driving, effortlessly speeding up and slowing down autonomously and maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles. And let’s not forget the always-up display, which keeps essential information like speed and navigation right in your line of sight—no more looking down at the dashboard.

And yet, there’s more. The Toyota C-HR Plug-In Hybrid comes with a six-page long equipment list. This list features everything from Apple CarPlay and Android Auto wireless smartphone integration, electrically adjustable, heated and auto-folding door mirrors, rain-sensing front wipers and autonomous parking. The list is endless, check out the brochure and see for yourself.

Performance & Efficiency

The plug-in hybrid system is where the C-HR truly shines. It delivers a smooth, seamless driving experience, effortlessly transitioning between electric and petrol power. Charging is a breeze, whether you’re plugging in at home or using a six-pin charger on the go.

While the C-HR isn’t built for breakneck speed, its steady and reliable performance inspires confidence. It’s perfect for zipping through city streets or cruising on the motorway, with excellent fuel efficiency in hybrid mode. For eco-conscious drivers, this car is a dream come true—proof that you don’t have to sacrifice performance for sustainability.

Family Friendliness

Travelling with my daughter, I appreciated the USB port in the back, which kept her tablet charged and her spirits high during the journey. The spacious boot easily swallowed our luggage, and the overall cabin design felt both stylish and practical. It’s a car that effortlessly adapts to the demands of family life without compromising on style.

Verdict

The Toyota C-HR Plug-In Hybrid is a car that looks as good as it drives, offering a comfortable, enjoyable ride whether you’re navigating city streets or embarking on a long-distance adventure. For families, solo drivers, or anyone in between, this C-HR proves that hybrid doesn’t mean compromise—it means driving smarter, greener, and in style.
