Sway – Q&A

Rapper Sway isn’t just an artist, he’s also an entrepreneur. At 25 he’s achieved more than people twice his age but he’s not satisfied yet. He tells Flavour that the hard work is far from over and he’s worked with the Kaiser Chiefs

What wound you stay makes you young and ambitious?
I have achieved so much at the age of 25 and I’m not even 25% satisfied yet. There’s more to do.

How did you managed to achieve your goals?
I’ll have to say through a lot hard work and prayer. That’s important.

What motivates you?
Money and more money (laughs).

How was your experience in the States?
It was really good. They are over there becoming more and more accepting of British hip hop. I was really happy to see UK act over there. Like in one night I met up with Estelle, Baby Blue and Dizzee Rascal – it was really good.

Can you tell me some news about Konvict UK and working with Akon?
I’m not part of Konvict UK. I’m part of Konvict Music, I have a deal with Akon. But I still wanna big up Konvict UK.

Did you have a personal experience with a girl? Is that why you wrote F Ur X??
Yes. I care for my exes, so yeah when I’m with someone that does generally upset them at times, but I’m faithful and have no secrets.

If you weren’t a famous MC or a producer, what would you be?
I’d have to say a politician because I like to run shit (laughs).

You’re involved in a volunteering scheme called Platform2 which gives 18 to 25-year-olds the opportunity, to volunteer in developing countries. Why did you want to be involved?
Platform2 is giving young people the opportunity of a lifetime; this experience will change their lives forever. I would have loved to have done something like this when I was younger. They will be able to make a huge difference to the communities they work with, plus it’ll help them understand how they can do their bit back home.

What are the perks of being Sway?
I get a lot of things for free. I get into a lot of places for free. I have many income sources and I get to meet a lot of wonderful people.

What is your motto for success?
If things are getting easier then that means you’re going down. Success is hard work.

What’s been the highlight of your career so far?
I’ll have to say winning the Mobo for the mixtape and also being the first Brit to win at the BET was definitely a career high for me.

Any career lows?
Losing Puffy, my business partner. That was an all-time low.

The best advice to help you succeed in the industry?
Work hard and take hints – if everyone is saying something maybe its true. Take advice from others around you.

The one person that inspires you?
Guy Katsav (producer) because he’s a workaholic and is always pushing me. Even when I don’t wanna work, he gets me too.

Tell me something exclusive something no one else knows.
I just did a track with the Kaiser Chiefs. It’s rock but I rap on it.
