Our skin gets more of a battering than you may think. Thanks to the weather, indoor conditions and work among many other things, your skin can go from glowing and fresh to dull and dry in a matter of minutes.
While you may have a whole team of skincare products in your bathroom cabinet, do you really need them all to make your skin healthy again? By following these steps, you can refresh and revitalise your skin all year round.
Water is the key
It’s talked about so much these days, but water really is important for your skin. It is necessary to drink 2 to 3 litres of water a day to stay hydrated, particularly in colder months when indoor conditions are warmer. If you don’t enjoy drinking water, you can easily jazz it up by adding in some fresh lemon, lime or mint. Chopped up slices of strawberry or kiwi can also add some flavour.
Get some shut eye
You know what they say – the best things in life are free. Sleep is one of the greatest things you can give to your skin, as a full and restful sleep will heal your body. It is recommended that an adult gets seven to nine hours of sleep a night to stay healthy physically and mentally, so start getting those early nights in. However, make sure not to lie on your stomach, as this is known to cause premature wrinkling and accelerate an aged appearance.
Use a chemical peel
This isn’t as scary as it sounds – promise! Chemical peels have been advertised a lot in recent years, claiming to have benefits that sound too good to be true. However, they actually can achieve many of the things they claim, as they were once restricted to use by licensed dermatologists and plastic surgeons. Now, they are readily available over the counter and in clinics like Belgrave Cosmetic Clinic, who can create a personal package for your needs. Chemical peels are definitely something to consider, though, as they’re great for helping with the effects of sun damage, alleviating acne, and shedding years from your skin.
Acquire some antioxidants
Antioxidants have been linked to many things, such as warding off colds and the flu to helping prevent cancer. They neutralise what doctors call free radicals, which damage DNA and cause wrinkles and cancer among many other ailments. Packed full of Vitamin A, C and E, antioxidants are essential for repairing and protecting the skin’s DNA. While there are many skincare products on the market that include antioxidants, an easier way to get them into your body is through foods like blueberries, green tea and kidney beans.
Get your body moving
Exercising promotes circulation, which will result in sweating. While none of us like to be sweaty, it supports the release of toxins from the body, so your skin will feel a lot better if you exercise regularly. Running or kickboxing are great for getting sweaty, but if they don’t sound like your sort of thing, why not try out hot yoga?
