OUT IN CINEMA’S THIS WEEK 7TH JUNE 2013

AFTER EARTH: Cypher Raige (Will Smith) and Son Kitai (Jaden Smith) crash land on Earth 1,000 years after the disastrous events which forced humanity from their home. Things take a turn for the worst when Cypher is badly injured and it’s down to Kitai to venture out into the unknown, encountering evolved animal species, unknown lands and a terrifying alien creature to raise help. Cypher and Kitai need to learn to trust each other if they are ever going to make it home again.

From the Director of Signs and The Sixth Sense, M. Night Shyamalan, and starring another Smith family collaboration, After Earth has major potential… on paper. In reality the storyline looks weak and all too familiar, even the trailer is a bit of a bore fest; it could just well turn out to be an expensive bonding session for this father and son team.

BEHIND THE CANDELABRA: From the makers of Magic Mike and the Ocean’s trilogy, Behind the Candelabra is based on the true story of the original outrageous showman entertainer, pianist Liberace and his secretive 5 year love affair with the handsome young stranger Scott Thorson. This is a behind the scenes look at this turbulent relationship from their first meeting backstage at the Las Vegas Hilton to their very bitter public break-up.

With Michael Douglas playing Liberace and Matt Damon playing his extremely troubled lover Scott, this could be a laugh a minute story, although it’s classed as a drama, seeing Matt in over the top make-up and an extremely camp Douglas could prove to be highly entertaining.

THE LAST EXORCISM PART II: The Last Exorcism part II is the sequel to the 2010 supernatural horror and follows Nell Sweetzer trying to rebuild her life after the horrific events of the 1st film. Nell is now living in a home for girls, got herself a job and has even gained the interest of a boy; unfortunate for Nell there just is no escaping the demons that she was once possessed by.

Produced yet again by Eli Roth, nothing much has seemed to change much in the style; it’s very much the B-movie we expect to see. Horror films and cheese seem to go hand in hand these days, but then again it’s that cheese which could be the making of this simply supernatural thriller.
