Something special happened to Carly Tait in 2012 at the closing ceremony of the London Paralympics.
Before this moment, Carly like many young women had a life of friends and bars and clubs and all the things that young people like to do. But in one moment, something special touched Carly and the event transformed her life…
At this same time, some of you may have felt it too. That inspirational moment that the Paralympics and Olympics brings to many people’s lives. It’s that moment that make you want to get up and do something, it’s this same moment that inspired Carly and she vowed to reach her goal and compete on the Rio Paralympics 2016.
Against all odds
This wasn’t just a simple moment of inspiration that dwindled away, this was the moment that Carly committed to her goal and through sheer determination, self-discipline and the help of employer the Co-op, Carly went onto qualify for the start line of the T34, 100m in Brazil.
Carly said: “My life changed beyond recognition having been inspired by the incredible achievements of British Paralympians at London 2012. Since 2012 there has been a huge amount of support from the British public for Para Athletes in the UK. Hopefully what I have been able to achieve can in some small way encourage others to take up Para Athletics and pursue their dreams.”

Why we love Carly
Carly, 31, who has cerebral palsy and lives in Wythenshawe, now trains as a full-time athlete after being granted a paid career-break from her marketing job at the Co-op to realise her dreams and ambitions. Carly recently returned from a warm-weather training camp in Australia will continue her full-time training in preparation for London 2017.
Co-op, the Official Team Supporter of the British Athletics para team, in association with British Athletics, will continue their support of Carly and Support Our Heroes ahead of this summer’s World Para Athletics Championships in London, 14 -23 July, by attempting to set a World Record for the online largest photo album of selfies.
We are encouraging everyone in Britain to show your support too, back our para athletes in the build-up to the championships, and be part of a record-breaking attempt at the same time by posting a message of support. The current world record stands at 126,460 selfies, and we want to surpass this number and celebrate the record achievement during the Championships.
The digital mosaic already includes multiple global medallist Richard Whitehead, and European medallists Carly Tait and Sam Ruddock.
Niels de Vos, the Chief Executive of British Athletics said: “A national good luck campaign of this calibre can only help motivate our athletes even more as we countdown towards the World Para Athletics Championships in July. This is yet another sign of the continuing support for para athletics amongst the British public.”
