Eight finalist girl groups have spent the months since their success at the Dare to Dance Competition training with Nike D-Clash dancers. The inspirational D-Clash troupe have closely mentored each team to compete for the title. Dedicated to celebrating and empowering young women in the UK, b.young-b.supreme will demonstrate how street dance inspires14-25 year olds to get ‘dance active’.
Involvement with b.young-b.supreme compliments Nikewomen’s overall Streetdance campaign which has evolved since its first competition to find the D Clash Troupe in 2006. Excited by the difference dance could make to disenfranchised young women, Nikewomen has worked with the Sports Action Zone and Waterloo Arts and Events Network to recognise and reward teenage dance talent, particularly focusing in the early stages on females from deprived communities in SE London.
The Nikewomen street dance project has included Engagement Days within schools (Key Stage 3) led by Nike athlete Kymberlee Jay and D Clash weekly community dance sessions. Positive feedback has been overwhelming with girls involved expressing an enhanced sense of confidence, self esteem and empowerment. Kym and the D Clash dancer’s stories embody dance making a difference in young women’s lives. Kym says: “I did not fit the conventional “norm” of a professional dancer and believed that I wouldn’t be able to make dance my life. The fact that I have done so, with the help of Nikewomen, inspires me to give back to these girls and show how being passionate about being active makes you stronger in body and mind.”
b.young-b.supreme promises to be an action-packed day with hip-hop dance battles, a wealth of DJ talent, freestyle events, workshops and star appearances from Nike’s own street dance star and mentor, Kymberlee Jay – who will be hosting the festival – as well as legendary US Breaker – Alien Ness.
