New Releases in Cinemas this week 21/06/2013

Welcome to this week’s round-up of what’s hot and what’s not in the world of new cinema releases. We have a wrestler turned actor in an action packed fight to save his son from prison, a hilarious and quite naughty spoof horror, A Zombie 3D drama which doesn’t quite take its self seriously and a British musical feast to choose from. This week isn’t entirely disappointing.

Snitch

John Matthews (Dwayne Johnson aka The Rock) is just a normal guy running his own construction company, when he receives a call from his ex-wife to tell him his estranged son Jason (Rafi Gavron) has been arrested and charged with the distribution of drugs.  Jason has been set-up by his friend and it’s down to John to pull a few strings with his connections and go undercover for the DEA in order to save his son from a lengthy prison sentence.

Based on true events, this film has a host of stars such as The Rock, Susan Sarandon, Benjamin Bratt and Michael Kenneth Williams gracing the screen for this action packed crime drama, which quite frankly could prove to be a surprisingly entertaining, not so cringe worthy film.

A Haunted House

Malcolm (Marlon Wayans) has finally grown up and is ready to take the plunge and let long term girlfriend, Keisha (Essence Atkins), move in with him. However, no sooner as she arrives, strange things start to go bump in the night, which certainly isn’t their sex life. Malcolm takes the obvious action of setting up CCTV and video camera’s around the house to find out what is really going on and soon discovers girlfriend Keisha has not only brought with her hordes of pointless stuff but also something quite demonic. The couple decides to recruit Father Williams (Cedric the Entertainer) to exorcise this demon out of their house and out of Keisha before it ruins every part of their relationship.

Marlon Wayans delivers yet another hilariously, silly, raunchy, immature comedy parody for us all to sit back and just enjoy, no brain cells needed but maybe a change of underwear would be a good idea.

World War Z

Ex United Nations Employee Gerry Lane (Brad Pitt) is taking time out to spend with his family when on a normal day out, driving through town; the city is hit by pandemonium. Whilst trying to get his family to safety he witnesses another “human” attack another through a bite and is horrified by the transformation.  Gerry soon finds himself gainfully employed by the United Nations once more to help travel across many countries in a bid to save the world from what would appear to be a Zombie pandemic which is fast destroying armies, government and most importantly, humanity.

Starring Brad Pitt, this highly engaging zombie, yet bum numbing movie could is messy at times but could prove to be a bit of a 3D guilty pleasure. There’s worse you could spend your money on.

Spike Island

Five 16 year olds from Manchester are about to embark on life after school. But first of all there’s a question of the most important gig of their life to attend, The Stone Roses legendary gig at Spike Island. This fictional story is based in the summer of the 1990, indie music is at the height of popularity, and every boy seems to dress like and want to be Ian Brown from the Stone Roses. Over 72 hours the boys face a journey which will test their friendships and shape their future.

Spike Island had its first showing in Britain at the BFI London Film Festival in October 2012 and had rave reviews.  This coming of age story is full of nostalgia and British comedy. If you’re a fan of any kind of music this will be a pleasurable, enjoyable ride.
