Each week, as Flavourmag’s resident Film Editor, I bring you my weekly roundup of new movies out in cinema. We have quite a lot of films for you to choose from this week and it’s not that bad a week either, saying that it’s not an Oscar winning week either.
LIFE
Photographer Dennis Stock (Robert Pattinson) who convinced a rebellious young actor on the cusp of stardom, James Dean (Dane DeHaan) to allow him to shoot him for LIFE Magazine. The men take a trip from LA to Dean’s hometown of Fairmont, Indiana, via Times Square, New York so that Stock could, in his words, capture Dean in all the environments that had “affected and shaped the unique character “. While Stock thinks he’s capturing a star in the moment before he breaks; in fact, he’s documenting Dean’s last moments of intimacy and simplicity.
Life may not quite deliver on its promise, but it’s a fascinating look back at one of Hollywood’s old time legends with an outstanding performance from Pattinson.
MISS YOU ALREADY
Milly (Toni Collette) is the woman who has everything: a successful career; a rock-star husband and two beautiful children. Her best friend is Jess (Drew Barrymore); she works in a community garden; lives in a boathouse with her boyfriend Jago and desperately wants a baby. Friends since childhood Jess and Milly can’t remember a time they didn’t share everything – secrets, clothes, even boyfriends, their differences are the glue that binds them together. That is until Milly is hit with the life changing news that she has breast cancer and needs Jess’s support more than ever. As Jess tries to balance her own life as well as being there for Milly it is only a matter of time before the pressure on their bond takes its toll.
This is certainly one for the female audience; ladies give the fella’s a break and take your best female friend for this one. Engaging, tender and funny but it won’t be winning any Oscars.
LESSONS IN LOVE
Richard is a successful college professor who gives up a steady stream of one-night stands and beautiful undergrads for fatherhood with much younger Kate. Three years later when Kate falls in love with someone else and moves out, she sends her sister, Olivia, to make sure Richard is properly caring for their son. Assuming Richard is back to his irresponsible playboy life style, Olivia is shocked when she starts to fall in love with him herself.
Lessons in Love is your predictable and formulaic romantic comedy, but it has a certain air of charm which you can just switch off and enjoy it for what it is, a feel good comedy.

99 HOMES
A desperate construction worker (Andrew Garfield) reluctantly accepts a job with the ruthless real-estate broker (Michael Shannon) who evicted him and his family from their home.
Intriguing and gritty and emotional drama which will sucker punch you when you least expect it. Be prepared to see Garfield in a completely different light as his star shines bright and delivers one of the best performances he has ever given.

NARCOPLIS
In the near future, Frank Grieves is a new breed of police officer working in a city where all recreational drugs are legal. When he is taken off a case involving an unidentified corpse, he discovers that legalization has come at a price.
A sci-fi thriller with so much promise but it’s full of plot holes, with way too much going on, a bit of a mess and has with no real explanation or character setting to make you feel any connection with the film at all.
