Tonga is the musical night that epitomises that; cheesy, over used, journalist speak word; ‘organic’. That aside Tonga has morphed and evolved and a year after it was first started by Murkage Dave and Mike Skinner it is now the night that is, how do we say; ‘trendy’?
To celebrate that first year where the likes of Kano and Giggs have blessed their live nights, the duo bring the first (of many) eps. Featuring Jammer and Big Narstie the three track ep sets the standard nicely.
In an interesting Q and A, Flavour spoke to one half of the team Murkage Dave to see how far they want this Tonga thing to go.
Murkage you said that you and Mike met and ‘f***d’ what was the f******g like?
Very well lubricated.
Tonga seems more than some music thing-explain Tonga more and what you and Mike wanted it to bring?
Tonga is an incredible party. Music happens to be something we love making, so we did that too.
Tonga seems extremely fluid but there must be lots that goes on-in the twelve months has it be challenging if so how, if not why?
To be honest it hasn’t been challenging at all. Apart from almost having a fist fight with a doorman once. The beauty of Tonga is that for the most part it feels effortless. Sometimes when the vibe is right, everything just feels easy. All we do is catch joke and share DJ Khaled memes. People love to harp on about how hard they are hustling but to be honest that shit is fucking boring. If you are truly doing the good Lord’s work it never feels like a chore.
What has been the most memorable moment so far since special guests seem to literally just turn up and surprise even the ‘crew’.
Kano in Manchester. Or Giggs in London. Mountain top bizness. Where do we go from here? #PopeBars perhaps. Vatican swag.
What’s planned for the end of the year bash?
We’re not having a Christmas party. Christmas is for PAGANS. But we are playing the Vice Xmas staff party though. And you know what those mans are like. Whatever pops off this is most definitely not going to be Christ-like.
Briefly the ep why Jammer and Narstie?
No real thought process. They are just both guys that we always run into on the scene.
Follow-up ep what can we expect?
We’re doing an album. DJ Khaled style. Mad features from talented individuals. With us shouting all over the shit so you can’t really hear what’s going on. ANOTHER ONE.
Individually what are the both of you up to?
We are all working on our singing voices-expect 2016 to get mellifluous.
