We managed to pull the founder of the Suicide Girls ‘Missy’ away from her busy schedule to talk all things tattoos, models, blackheart burlesque & Suicide Girls.

But right now its all about the founder Missy Suicide and here’s what she had to say.
How did you come up with the name Suicide Girls?
It represents girls who choose to commit “social suicide” by choosing not to fit in. It comes from a Chuck Palahnuik book Survivor, in it he describes the girls who hung out at Pioneer Square in Portland. It felt right.

Rose, she was my neighbour 🙂

Transforming alternative models into mainstream media models is not an easy task. Why did you choose start this mammoth project?
I was frustrated with homogeny and misogyny I found in mainstream media and really all around me. I thought that the women that I knew were some of the most beautiful in the world and deserved to be celebrated. I wanted them to feel comfortable in their bodies. So I said fuck it I am going to build them a site for them. A place where they can be themselves and people who appreciate them can come together and share ideas and be respected. I didn’t know if anyone outside of Portland OR would get it but it turns out a lot of people share my idea that confidence is the sexiest attribute a person can have.
Can you see all your hard work paying off, in recent years?
I do think that there are a more diverse group of women that are considered beautiful. We have Kim Kardashian and her bum now to add to the unattainable body types that women are supposed to obsesses over. 😉
But in all seriousness I think we have had a huge impact, tattoos, coloured hair, piercings are all thought to be beautiful now. Women are able to express themselves.
Do you think there needs to me more work in terms of bringing alternative looking girls into the limelight?
Of course, that is what the next 15 years are for 🙂
Looking back at your younger self, what advice would you give Missy when she decided to launch the Suicide Girls?
Be more confident in your ideas. I wish that I had trusted my gut more.
