Buying a new watch: it’s not as easy as it looks. Luxury watches, smartwatches, cheap watches, expensive watches, and everything in between!
If you fancy a new timepiece, then it can be a little overwhelming to know exactly what you should pick up. Although smartphones and basically every electronic device out there has a clock on it, wrist watches still have their place in the world, as they are cool, elegant, and usually far more convenient.
We want to give some love to the world of watches by matching up your personality to a particular brand. So, which watch is for you?
The Cool Guy
There’s no doubt that Rolex and Omega watches are very expensive, but they are incredibly beautiful and impeccably crafted items. However, we think that the third member of the Swiss watchmaker family is, in fact, far cooler (and not as expensive) as the others, and that brand is Tag Heuer. Their designs are always on-point and the name isn’t associated with being rich and extravagant in the way Rolexes are, for example. Furthermore, Tag Heuer partners with a whole heap of cool people as brand ambassadors, including Tom Brady, Ronaldo, Bella Hadid, Chris Hemsworth, Cara Delevingne, David Guetta and Martin Garrix, to name a few. Tag Hauer is cool without being pompous.
The Tech Guy
If you’re a person who needs the latest version of everything and more features than you even know what to do with, then you can’t go wrong with the Apple Watch. We’ll soon see the third edition of the fantastic smartwatch, but if you can’t wait any longer, then there’s no reason why you couldn’t pick up a second or even first edition Apple Watch (likely to be far more affordable, anyway).
With built-in GPS, a heart rate sensor, water resistance, customisable watch faces, and some fun little games, the tech guy obviously needs an Apple Watch. There was an issue that Apple’s smartwatch was, well, not very fashionable… but this was quickly remedied in their partnership with Hermès.
The Tough Guy
You’re someone who doesn’t mind getting a bit physical out there in the wild, whether that’s rock climbing, scuba diving, or even an intense race like Tough Mudder. For all those scenarios, you’re going to need a watch that can withstand a few bangs and scrapes, not to mention several meters underwater. You don’t care too much about style, preferring functionality and durability.
We’re having a bit of trouble choosing just one watch, so we’re going to stray from the one brand rule and suggest something in the “military watch” category. These were obviously watches built for the Army, Air Force, and Navy, so you know they’re not going to let you down. Anything from the Omega Seamaster to the Rolex Submariner to the Bell & Ross BR V1-92 is worth checking out, but you can also see a great deal more if those brands don’t appeal to you.
The Straightforward Guy
Finally, there is a watch that many consider to be perhaps too “cheap,” but they are forgetting that being functional and pretty, whilst not necessarily outstanding, is also completely fine. There are those people who don’t wish to stand out or make a scene, but simply be happy and a fine addition to any scenario. For those types of people, we think a Swatch watch is perfect. Also a Swiss brand, Swatch’s models are very affordable, basic but not ugly, and come in such a variety of colours that there’s always something for everyone. Swatch made a big splash a few years ago (big for Swatch) with their Sistem51 model, but even with all the fanfare, it was still a humble watch at only $150 (about £115).
