Omnivores and carnivores rejoice the Hungry Donkey has launched the ‘Meat by The Kilo’ souvlaki menu.
The Greek street food restaurant situated on Wentworth Street, London, E1 (a stone throw away from Spitalfields market) launched the ‘Meat by Kilo’ on the Greek day of Tsiknopempti which is aptly known otherwise as the ‘Feast of Carnivores’, the new menu allows groups to share platters of succulent spit roasted meats served with a selection of Greek sides.
Flavourmag had the pleasure of visiting the restaurant and sampling the ‘Meat by Kilo’ feast as we shared platters of succulent spit roasted meats served with a selection of traditional Greek sides before we saw Batman vs Superman in the cinema. Whoop.
Being meat lovers, we was surprised how tasty the Greek side salad served with our meats tasted. For a moment we all looked at each other and said ‘wow this is good salad’ and we hadn’t even tasted the meat at that time.
The Greek side-dish perfectly accompanied our spit roasted lamb and spit roasted pork which took roughly 45 mins to arrive on the table, giving ample time to order a selection of starters and wine to get your tastebuds ripped and ready for the main course.
For starters we chose PAPOUTSAKIA (roasted aubergine, fresh tomato sauce & feta), GRILLED HALOUMI and SAGANAKI
(pan-fried organic graviera cheese) and a bottle of red wine (MONEMVASIA WINERY, AGIORGITIKO/MAVROUDI 2006). This wine is full bodied yet easy to drink and will sit perfectly with your spit roasted meat.
Other new additions to the menu include Spetzofai (traditional Greek sausage stewed in a tomato sauce with red peppers, smoked paprika and Boukovo chilli), Gigantes (white runner beans baked in a tomato sauce with celery & carrots), Artichoke Fricassee and Portokalopita (orange ripple cake). There are also new options for customers with intolerances including a delicious gluten-free Moussaka and a dairy-free Rizogalo (rice pudding).
If you are visiting Spitalfields market an or going to be close to Aldgate or even Shoreditch, then simply pop over to The Hungry Donkey and give it a try. It will probably become one of those hidden gem places to dine on your list of hot spots.
