Job title: Global PR Manager
Company: Motel Rocks
Tell us what your job role entails?
I oversee all PR activity for the brand and this can cover media placements, generating and maintaing press relations, celebrity and stylist meetings, press days, blogger events and working with our international PR agencies.
Describe your working day or week?
It’s a vary varied role and no two days are ever the same, but typically I’ll start my day by checking the news and scanning through all our social media media channels on my commute into the office. Then I’ll catch up on emails, have internal meetings with the team regarding any campaigns or events we’re working on and have meetings with journalists where we’ll discuss the new season Motel collections.
What key skills do you need to do your job?
The ability to multi-task is essential as I’m likely to be juggling several campaigns, different lead times for both media and collection launches and planning events whilst maintaing day-to-day activities. On top of that – I’d say a smile! It’s a really social job and I’m constantly meeting new people, so being positive and personable is important.
Best part of your job?
Seeing the entire process from start to finish. I love getting sneak peeks from the design team on new collections they are working on and then in time seeing these develop into collections, go through to sampling, campaign shoots and finally being worn by our gorgeous Motel customers, bloggers and high-profile fans.
Worst part of your job?
There’s never enough hours in the day!
Most memorable moment at work?
A couple of seasons ago we had a really 90’s inspired collection and so created a press day with a 90’s house party vibe. We sent out cassette tapes as invites and sourced loads of original 90’s props to dress the space including blow up furniture, copies of The Face and a game of Dream Phone! We served Hooch and Slush Puppies as refreshments and snacked on Pop Tarts. It was so nostalgic and everyone loved hanging out there for the day.
If I’m choosing a course to study, what type of course suits this job best?
To be honest, I don’t think you need to study PR to be a good PR and get your foot in the door. Knowledge of marketing and social media will be a big benefit but I’d say getting some work experience would be most important – learn the ropes, start making contacts and go above and beyond to get jobs done efficiently and stand out from the rest. Everyone in the industry has been through work experience and great interns really do stand out and go far.
Does work experience really help you to get the dream job?
Absolutely!
