Gilgamesh – Restaurant Review

Situated in the heart of Camden’s Lock you would be forgiven for not realising that a restaurant like this was there.

On arrival you are greeted with an escalator that brings you up into the venue. Ambient lighting and spacious seating is all part of the Gilgamesh appeal. Tonnes of crafted woodwork, a huge ceiling that opens up in the summer to give you that feeling of dinning alfresco.

The menu boasts a selection of Pan-Asian dishes, influenced by the cuisine of South East Asia, China and Japan, including Sushi, Tempura, New Style Sashimi, Dim Sum and more, as well as an extensive wine list (we started the night with a 2012 bottle of Chablis). Not a fan of wine? Fear not, Gilgamesh also have a 2 page cocktail menu with everything from Martini Cocktails to Long Cocktails and even Sake cocktails so you will easily find your drink of choice.

For starters we dined on Edamame, House Ceviche (very crisp and refreshing), Crispy Black Cod, Yellow fin Tuna (my personal favourite of all the starters) and Soft Shell Crab tempura which came in at a very close 2nd. Bare in mind some of these starters, start from £4 upwards to £12 so the price point makes it exceptional value for money.

Onto the main course and we chose the Wagyu Beef Sirloin which was a tad pricey at £72 compared to the other main courses on the menu which start from £14 upwards to £30, but let me steer you over to the Royal Chilean Seabass (marinated in tamarind and miso, baked in hoba leaf) which tasted glorious. Cooked to perfection and the tamarind and miso drizzle complemented the fish in spectacular fashion and at only £30 if you love fish then this is the main course I would advise you to try. You will not be disappointed.

With a tummies almost full and our minds relaxed in the ambience of the venue it was time to take on the desert.

We decided to try a small sample of all the deserts which consisted of Apple & Pear Crumble with Exotic Fruit Sorbet, Passion Fruit Crème Brûlée and Green Tea Cheese Cake. The funny thing is, (desert fans look away now) I’m not a desert fan myself, so I will try not to say anything bad about the deserts because they where all nice, however the simplest desert on the table was the apple crumble which to me was the tastiest of the lot. Sometimes you just can’t beat a good ole crumble eh?

3 courses finished and all that’s left for me to mention is how friendly the staff where, I was served by Analisa who new the menu as is she created it herself. She was charming and tasteful just as with all the staff at Gilgamesh.
