Residing in Paris, French tastemaker Dafonk is back with a funky new album ‘Heaven.’ ‘Heaven’ is an ode to the original funkster ‘Prince.’
Produced and entirely by Dafonk the album is enriched with killer keys and horns letting us know that the funk is well and truly alive in 2017.
We chat to Dafonk about his radio silence, what the inspiration behind ‘Heaven’ was, and how he’s dabbling into Electro.
It’s been a while since you dropped anything, where have you been?
I’ve been working on the tracks of ‘Heaven,’ as well as experimenting on Electro as a side project.
Since music is not my main job, it takes a lot of time to complete the tracks and the inspiration doesn’t strike all the time.
You just released ‘Heaven,’ could you tell us about it?
This album is based on instrumentals I had for a long time, I wanted to have slam and rap on it.
Compared to my previous album “You Can’t Do That In Studio Anymore Vol.1,” I’ve done it by myself and produced it. I’m really pleased with the result.
Do you think Funk is alive today?
Funk is alive but more the pop side of it. Real funkateers are hard to find, like George Clinton said “Say it loud I’m funk and I’m proud”
Who was your favourite artists listening to growing up and why?
My brother introduced me to funk when I was 8 year old with James Browns. He came back from the us with Zapp and Prince records.
Top 3 funksters you love?
1. Prince
2. James Brown
3. George Clinton
What’s next for you?
I’m working on an electro project called “Electro Shock,” which consists of me and my machines. I would like some funkateers (keys, horns) to jam on it.
You decided to make CDs for your album, any particular reason why?
I grew up listening to CDs and LPs, album as a whole, with the MP3 generation people skip the tracks. I thought the setlist was short and perfect for an old-school like album.
