A Brief Guide To Becoming Cultured & Developing Fine Taste

Do you know someone who is the same age as you but has somehow lived significantly longer? These people are knowledgeable about a plethora of subjects and always the initiators of interesting conversations.

They achieve this by immersing themselves in everything life has to offer. They are constantly learning and evolving, which puts them in their own subset of being cultured.

But don’t you have to be rich to experience life at its best? We agree that being cultured in the past was attainable for the upper strata of society. But thanks to the Internet, today anyone can discover and learn without going into debt.

Don’t get us wrong, but there is no step-by-step guide to become cultured overnight. However, here are some ways in which you can enhance your cultural knowledge. The Script perfectly put it ‘You can be a master, don’t wait for luck’.

So, carry on reading.

Indulge in food

Food is perhaps the easiest (and most delicious) way to become more cultured. There are so many cuisines, tastes and flavours waiting to awe your taste buds. Look for places serving food from different countries. Food festivals offer the perfect opportunity to try several dishes. For a cheaper alternative, search for a recipe online and try recreating it at home.

Broaden your media preferences

Streaming services have completely transformed how we consume media. You no longer have to wait a week to watch the next episode or stand in line at the box office. You have access to an extensive collection of movies and TV shows on your laptop.

Rather than spending your weekends binging a teenage drama, add foreign movies and TV shows to your watchlist. Huge blockbusters are enjoyable, but indie cinema will surprise and delight you.

Go to live performances

While watching something from the comfort of your home is convenient, it doesn’t come close to watching a live performance. From witty stand-up comedy to mesmerising ballet, you should catch live events happening in your city.

Expand your library by including foreign literature books. It’s the best way to travel without actually travelling.

Talk to people from different cultures

There is no better way to learn more about other cultures than talking to people from the said culture. Always approach people with kindness and an open mind.

Visit museums, art galleries and exhibitions

Learn to appreciate art in various forms. You probably won’t understand a lot of it in the beginning, but continue to visit museums, art galleries and exhibitions. If you have the resources, then travel to countries with world-famous museums.

Delve into new music genres

A lot of us are quite sheltered when it comes to music. We tend to continue listening to the same genre we have for years.

But you need to get out of this bubble and explore. From heavy metal to Tamil trap, listen to music from different genres and countries.

Take an interest in architecture

Just like a Van Gogh painting, architecture in itself is art. Familiarise yourself with the world’s greatest buildings and well-known architects. And if you get the chance, go and marvel at their splendour in person.

Learn about major religions

You don’t have to be religious to learn more about the world’s major religions. Studying various beliefs and religious practices might sound a bit dull but trust us, it’s fascinating. And who knows, you might even have a spiritual awakening.

Be on top of current events

It is extremely important to keep up with what’s going on around the globe politically and economically. There’s so much more going on in the world outside of your native country. Get subscriptions for unbiased political and economic publications.

There is no set way to become more cultured. You just need to be hungry to learn and Eat, Pary, Love your way through life.
