Everyone has experienced that feeling of wanting to lose it. Eminem did so in 2004. It’s the instance when you realise you’ve been pushed to the edge. Now, that can be related to pretty much anything from letting yourself go and getting down in a crowded night club or to one losing their mind. Regardless, it’s a feeling which one undergoes in building themselves.
Jenn D is managing to build huge momentum, whilst infusing heavy influences of pop and dance floor delight into her music. She’s got a hell of a voice that makes her an exciting new addition to the list of emerging artists of 2012 / 13. Once you fall under her charm, you might never be the same. In this exclusive interview, Jenn D talks about her forthcoming album, new single ‘Lose it’, wanting to work with Kylie, and much more.
You’ve been, jet setting around the world putting together your debut album. What can we expect from it?
A mix of dance and influence just reflecting my up-to-date life. I guess it’ll also surround the process of bringing it together over the past year and a half.
Your music has been featured on E4’s ‘Made In Chelsea’. Are you a fan of the show?
Yeah – I do like the show. I wasn’t really keen on it before my music was featured on there, but I love the fact that they have made such an effort to feature so many new UK artists
Would you be interested in appearing on the show?
I’m not sure if I’m posh enough [Laughs]…But maybe a little dash across the screen as a novelty northerner, I suppose would work.
What’s the story behind ‘Lose It’?
Well, we had a couple of writing sessions and on the first day after going into the studio, we wrote a few tracks. The aim was to write something that we would love and would want to get up and dance to. We just went for it. It was quite bold, minimal, and I was just dancing around pretty much all day in the studio. It was somewhat a natural process.
Have you ever lost it?
Yeah, of course… [Laughs]
You’ve being dubbed “the next big thing”? Is that intimidating to you or just nailbiting?
I mean it is obviously slightly nerve racking, but I try not to really think about it. I’m just focusing on doing my thing. I make the music that I want to make and I’m very fortunate to have a label behind me that supports me doing that.
You’re currently working with the same team behind Kylie, Girls Aloud and The Saturdays. What’s the plan – are you intending to follow in their footsteps?
It would be absolutely amazing to have a 25-year career like Kylie if you put it that way. I mean I love those artists, and I think of the experience I’ve learned a lot from the different people behind them. I’d also like to think that in a way I have brought something new to the table, and that I’ve inspired them. I think between us all we have come up with something fresh and exciting. I also love artists like Kylie, I think she’s such a perfect popstar.
Would Kylie be someone who you’d like to work with?
Yeah, I would love to work with Kylie. She’s an absolute legend.
There’s a line in one of your songs where you say more or less that “You are shaking you’re ass,” is that something which you like to do very often?
[Silence then Laughter] That is something I definitely do a lot on the weekend.
What in life, do you do really well and not so well?
I can run and cook quite well. I can’t do anything too fancy but if you want a home cook meal then I’m your gal. On the other hand, I think I’m quite stubborn, and I tend to worry too much, actually my Nan is the queen of worrying.
How will you be hoping to avoid female rivalry in the music world?
There’s a lot of great vibe around at the moment, everyone is doing really well on a global scale, and I think it’s a really positive thing. I’m a big believer of positivity breathing positive things, so I just think it’s not all negativity towards other artists.
What is the weirdest object you have written song lyrics down on when you don’t have a recording device or a notebook?
I can remember writing on a takeaway menu [Laughs]…in between Chinese meals are all my lyrics.
What is the most elaborate gift you have bought yourself since your success?
To be honest I have just been so busy I haven’t really had the chance to do any shopping. I’ll keep you posted on when I buy something really extravagant.
What’s next for you?
First and foremost I’m releasing my first single in the UK, whilst doing a lot of promo, and at the end of November I’ve got my first live London show, which is going to be really, really fun.
