5 reasons you should watch ‘Dear White People’

Winner of the 2014 Sundance Film Festival’s Special Jury Award for Breakthrough Talent, Dear White People is a sly, provocative satire of race relations in the age of Obama.

Writer/director Justin Simien follows a group of African American students as they navigate campus life and racial politics at a predominantly white college in a sharp and funny feature film debut that earned him a spot on Variety’s annual “10 Directors to Watch.”

Here’s 5 reasons you should watch ‘Dear white People’.

1. They have a variety of black students with different upbringings, showing diversity within the black community excluding stereotypes.

2. This film explores cultural appropriation in a light hearted, but factual and straightforward way.

3. It’s educational in the way that it teaches viewers the importance of discussing race issues openly with other races to find ways to solve inequality.

4. This film will have you laughing from the beginning all the way to the end. Occasionally hiding your face in shame, when sympathising with misinformed characters.

5. The title ‘Dear White People’ is bold and provocative. They are practically taunting you to watch it, and you won’t be disappointed once you get the courage to do it.

Out July 10th at selected cinemas nationwide. Go to http://www.dearwhitepeoplemovie.co.uk/Screenings.php to see the list of cinemas where you can watch Dear White People.
